Back before I started my business, I spent a lot of time sitting at a desk in an office. And I mean a lot of time – 10+ hours a day in some jobs. In that time, on particularly bad days, I sometimes searched for helpful articles. I noticed that a lot of articles outlining quick ways to cheer yourself up had advice that wasn’t too helpful for office life. As much as I would have loved to have a bath or meditate, it just wasn’t practical at my desk!
So here are seven things I used to lift my mood. I hope they help you a little, too!
1. Eat something high in protein
If you’re anything like me, sugar spikes and crashes really affect your mood. So eating something high in protein can help balance you out and remove any hangry feelings without guilt or crashes.
2. Put headphones on
Listen to some upbeat music, shut yourself off from the world. And if the company you work for doesn’t allow headphones, quit. (I’m joking. Kind of).
3. Book a meeting room
One of the best tips I’ve read is to just book a meeting room for yourself to get some space. This is especially handy in open plan offices or loud rooms. Even if you don’t have a laptop you can take in there, you can still write notes, lists, and plans. Most managers are generally okay with you doing this if you explain what you’re doing.
4. Read ZenHabits
ZenHabits is one of my favourite websites for self-help, feeling happier, and just general well-being. They seem to have an article on every possible situation and state of mind, so it’s always good to browse when you’re having an off day.
5. Recall a funny memory
What’s the most memorable time you can think of where you couldn’t breathe from laughing so hard? Go through the whole situation in your mind – it’s guaranteed to at least put a smile on your face, no matter how silly or trivial it may seem.
6. Sit up straight and take deep breaths
It’s a bit of a cliche, but your posture can really affect your mood. Sit up straight, and take deep breaths. Exhale for twice as long as you inhale. Close your eyes if it helps.
7. Take a screen break
It doesn’t matter what your excuse is – going to pee, nipping out for a five minute break, even walking around the lesser-used parts of the building can help. Brisk walking tends to help more, and also means you’re less likely to get stopped by someone as you look busy.
One last thing…
Finally – if you have the odd bad day at the office, that’s totally normal. On the other hand, if you find yourself getting really distressed or stressed on a regular basis, there’s no way to work on or resolve the causes, or you’re unhappy more than 10% of the time, take a look at if this environment is healthy enough for you. You deserve better, and you deserve happiness.
