With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, this time of year is traditionally when people focus on love. But instead of reserving it for just one day (or another person!), here are my top tips on how to love yourself every day of the year.
Yes, it may seem a little cheesy, but you don’t have to tell anyone you’re doing it 😉
Keep a happy file or notebook
This is one of my favourite things to do. When you get a random compliment from someone, screenshot it, or write it down, or basically just make a copy of it in some way. Keep it in a physical or virtual folder, and go through it when you’re having a bad day or feeling let down. It’s an instant reminder of how loved you are. Can’t be bothered or don’t have the willing? Hit “save”, “like” or “favourite” on social networks or similar when people say nice things, or if you have a blog, go back and re-read the comments from time to time. Keeping old greetings cards is also a good way to passively do this.
Do something nice for yourself
If, like me, you struggle with this, think of it in terms of the same way you’d do something nice for someone else. It doesn’t have to be anything big or expensive…I tend to treat myself to a face mask, or a new book, or just a bit of a lie-in if I can. This could be something good for you as well, like taking the time to make a fresh salad or putting on a YouTube video and doing some stretches.
Do something self-care-y
Even if you have to write it on your calendar or to-do list. There are a few major categories to choose from: de-stressing, physical movement, eating better, learning something, whatever it is you feel like doing. Pick one thing a day to do that involves looking after you, even if you only spend five minutes on it. Some of my favourite things to do include reading a chapter of non-fiction book on Scribed, doing some stretches or deep breathing, prepping healthier meals, and listening to a relaxing playlist.
Turn negative thoughts into positive thoughts
This is a tip I read recently that I’ve been trying out, and so far it’s working pretty well! When you find yourself thinking a negative thought, replace with a positive one. (If you find this difficult or trite to begin with, try thinking of a happy or funny memory instead). Over time you can literally train your brain, as you start to naturally think more positively. Give it a go, you might be surprised how well it works!
Drink more water
I mentioned this before in A simple trick to drink more water without noticing. As you know, water powers your body, so one of the more boring ways to love yourself is to drink more of it!
What are your thoughts on loving yourself every day of the year? Let me know in the comments!
